Gheluvelt Park
Gheluvelt Park is a public park in Worcester, England, opened on June 17, 1922, to honor the Worcestershire Regiment’s 2nd Battalion for their critical role in the Battle of Gheluvelt, a World War I engagement fought on October 31, 1914, near Ypres, Belgium. The park was inaugurated by Field Marshal John French, 1st Earl of Ypres, who declared, “On that day, the 2nd Worcesters saved the British Empire.”
A commemorative plaque within the park honors Captain Gerald Ernest Lea, who died on September 15, 1914, while commanding D Company of the 2nd Battalion.
The park features a duck pond with a bandstand, a children’s play area, and a supervised paddling pool, making it a vibrant community space.

Battle of Gheluvelt – 31st October 1914
In 1914, the German Army aimed to overwhelm the French and British forces, bypass Paris, and seize the Channel ports. The British Army, holding the line at Ypres, was the last defense against German advancement.
Gheluvelt, a crucial village, was the last position under British control from which the enemy could be challenged. By noon on October 31, 1914, British forces were overwhelmed, creating a gap in the line. Plans for a retreat were underway.
At 1:00 PM, the 2nd Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment was ordered to recapture Gheluvelt. Despite heavy shelling and casualties, they advanced, launching a final charge into the chateau grounds.
The battalion entered battle with 370 men, of whom 187 were killed or wounded, but their efforts saved Gheluvelt and restored the British line.
